Abstract

Mercury is a dangerous heavy metal to fish and human who consumed that contaminated fish. The objective of the research was to analysis the effect of mercury to physiological condition of milkfish which reared in various level of salinity. Experiment was divided into four treatments: A (0% + 0 mg Hg L-1); B (0%o + 0.012 mg Hg L-1); C (10%o + 0.012 mg Hg L-1); and D (20%o + 0.012 mg Hg L-1), each with three replications. Milkfish of 7-8 cm in length was reared in aquarium of 60 x 40 x 40 cm3 in size, filled with 40 L of water. Twenty milkfish were added into each aquarium, fed by artificial food up to 5% biomass, 3 times per day during 30 day of experiment. Physiological parameters were observed by measuring osmotic gradient, oxygen consumption and blood glucose. Within freshwater conditions, the results showed that osmotic gradient and blood glucose increased, while oxygen consumption decreased in response to the present of mercury. Milkfish that reared in 10%o salinity showed better physiological conditions than other treatment, i.e. osmotic gradient 0.237±0.088 Osm kg-1 H2O, oxygen consumption 0.257±0.037 mgO2 g-1 hour-1, and blood glucose 11.77±1.30 mg mL-1. It was shown that the toxicity level of mercury were the lowest at 10%o salinity.


Abstrak


Merkuri merupakan logam berat yang sangat berbahaya bagi kehidupan ikan, bahkan dapat membahayakan kesehatan bagi yang mengkonsumsi ikan yang telah terkontaminasi logam berat tersebut.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pengaruh merkuri terhadap kondisi fisiologis ikan bandeng yang dipelihara pada berbagai tingkat salintas. Percobaan terdiri atas empat perlakuan yakni: A (0% + 0 mg Hg L-1), B (0%o + 0,012 mg Hg L-1), C (10%o + 0,012 mg Hg L-1), dan D (20%o + 0,012 mg Hg L-1).Masing-masing perlakuan memiliki tiga ulangan. Ikan bandeng yang berukuran 7-8 cm dipelihara dalam akuarium berukuran 60 x 40 x 40 cm3 dengan volume air 40 L. Masing-masing akuarium diisi dengan 20 ekor ikan bandeng dan dipelihara selama 30 hari. Pakan buatan berbentuk pellet diberikan tiga kali per hari sebanyak 5% dari bobot biomassa. Parameter yang diukur meliputi beban osmotik, tingkat konsumsi oksigen, dan kadar glukosa darah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada ikan bandeng yang dipelihara di media air tawar, keberadaan merkuri menyebabkan naiknya beban osmotik dan kadar glukosa darah serta menurunkan tingkat konsumsi oksigen. Kondisi fisiologis ikan bandeng yang dipelihara pada salinitas 10%o lebih baik dibandingkan perlakuan lainnya dengan nilai beban osmotik 0,237±0,088 Osm kg-1 H2O, tingkat konsumsi oksigen 0,257±0,037 mgO2 g-1 jam-1 dan kadar glukosa darah 11,7±1,30 mg.mL-1. Dampak toksisitas merkuri terhadap kondisi fisiologis ikan bandeng berkurang ketika dipelihara pada media dengan salinitas 10%o.
