Abstract

Giant gouramy, Osphronemus septemfasciatus was introduced to science along with O. laticlavius by Roberts in 1992, then he described other new species: O. exodon in 1994. This lead genus Osphronemus has four species namely O. goramy, O. septemfasciatus, O. laticlavius, and O. exodon. There are two species living in Indonesian waters i.e. O. goramy and O. septemfasciatus. Not much biologic information about this fish is available, it differ from O. goramy that has been cultured. The observation in Sibau River, Mendalam River (Kapuas Basin), and Seturan River (Seturan Basin) indicated that this fish is rare, live in clear water in the upper river, big river, and in the mouth of the tributary. Beside, there are reports indicating that this fish was found in the middle of Mahakam Basin and Osphronemus cf. septemfasciatus was found in the lower part of Kapuas Basin.

 

Abstrak

Ikan gurame sungai, Osphronemus septemfasciatus pertama kali diperkenalkan ke dunia ilmu pengetahuan bersama dengan O. laticlavius oleh Roberts pada tahun 1992, kemudian jenis lainnya yaitu O. exodon pada tahun 1994. Hal ini menyebabkan ikan Osphronemus beranggotakan empat jenis yaitu O. goramy, O. septemfasciatus, O. laticlavius, dan O. exodon. Di perairan Indonesia terdapat O. goramy dan O. septemfasciatus. Berbeda dengan O. goramy yang sudah dibudidayakan, keterangan mengenai aspek-aspek biologi O. septemfasciatus masih sedikit. Pengamatan di Sungai Sibau, Sungai Mendalam (daerah aliran Sungai Kapuas), dan Sungai Seturan (daerah aliran Sungai Seturan) menun-jukkan bahwa ikan ini keterdapatannya jarang, hidup di hulu sungai di air yang jernih di sungai utama dan di mulut anak sungai. Selain itu, dari beberapa laporan ditemukan bahwa ikan ini hidup di bagian pertengahan DAS Mahakam dan Osphronemus cf. septemfasciatus ditemukan di bagian hilir DAS Kapuas.
